A guide for Parque das Naçoes, the Web Summit home in Lisbon

Today Web Summit 2019 begins in Lisbon. Parque das Nações, or Expo as it is also called, will host the most important technology conference in the world once more.

Although I have lived for 2 years in this neighbourhood, and have always been a technology enthusiast, besides having worked in a technology startup and being married to an IT professional, unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity of attending this major event. But I could see a little bit of Web Summit dynamic and how it affects Parque das Naçoes and Lisbon as a whole.

Most of the roundtables and workshops will take place in Altice Arena and FIL, but understanding how this neighbourhood is organized can make a big difference for enjoying the most of the events and the beautiful attractions as well.

To make the life of who is attending the event easier, I prepared this quick guide with the most interesting points of the area. I hope it helps anyone visiting this neighbourhood for Web Summit or for leisure.

1. Gare do Oriente –Train, subway and buses station.

This is the major public transports hub in Parque das Nações. Your day will probably begin or end around here. Check the official websites of Lisbon public transports to get information on tickets, hours and routes.

2. Centro Comercial Vasco da Gama

A nice mall with stores, supermarket, restaurants and luggage room services. Whoever comes from Gare do Oriente will be able to cross the mall to Alameda dos Oceanos and find the main accesses to the Web Summit events.

3. Amorino Gelato

– This ice cream shop is on the ground level of Vasco da Gama mall, next to Alameda dos Oceanos exit. Here you will have a delicious gelato in the shape of a flower.

4. FIL and Altice Arena

Most of Web Summit events will take place in these spaces. FIL and Altice Arena are just in front of Centro Comercial Vasco da Gama at Alameda dos Oceanos. Follow the Web Summit instructions to find the check-in points for the event.

5. Eric Kayser Supercor Expo

Plan your days to have a break to try this bakery’s specialities. My suggestion is the almonds croissant and a cup of coffee.

6.Restaurante D’Bacalhau

– If you want to try “bacalhau” and different Portuguese recipes for codfish, this restaurant is a nice choice. If you pick the “codfish mix” from the menu, you will have the chance of tasting four different dishes of bacalhau.

7. Mural do Vip Executive Arts Hotel

You don’t need to stay in this hotel to take a look at this amazing wall themed with DC Comics characters.

8.Oceanário de Lisboa

Try to take a morning or afternoon off to visit Oceanario and relax a little bit watching the fishes on the main aquarium. It is a nice way to reset your mind to learn all that news presented on Web Summit.

9. Ponte Vasco da Gama

Walk to Tagus Riverbank and admire Vasco da Gama Bridge.

10. Telecabine

Take a ride on this cable car to have a great view of Parque das Nações. There are two stations, one close to Myriad Hotel and the other one next to Oceanario.

11. Take a look at Parque das Nações modern architecture and observe how it is different from the other historical and traditional Lisbon districts.

12. Vasco da Gama tower

It is a must-see point in Parque das Nações. The tower is 140-meter-high and has the shape of a sailboat. The restaurant Fifty Seconds is located on the top of the tower and its access is through Myriad Hotel.

13. Sky Bar Oriente

This bar on the rooftop of Hotel Tivoli Oriente is a nice option for having a drink by the end of the day while enjoying the beautiful view from the top.

14. Marina Parque das Nações

If the weather is nice, walk by the river to the South, passing by Oceanario until you reach Parque das Nações Marina. Watch people fishing and the buildings with ship shapes.
