Jardim da Cerca da Graça, a pleasant garden in historic Lisbon

I love walking around Lisbon. Especially in the neighbourhoods of Alfama, Baixa and Graça, the traditional neighbourhoods in downtown Lisbon.

I love seeing the “elétrico” (the way Portuguese call the yellow Lisbon tram) passing by, the tourists buzz, the old architecture, the clothes hanging outside the windows. So many photogenic spots that I could lose myself every day around there and wouldn’t get tired.  But for a 10-year-old boy, like my son, those narrow and crowded streets are not that interesting.

Whenever my husband and I want to go for a walk in those areas, we always try to find something interesting for my son as well, so that he doesn’t get bored quickly.

On that day, we wanted to go to Miradouro da Graça to have a drink by the end of a sunny afternoon, and after a little research on Google Maps we found out Jardim da Cerca da Graça.

After taking the subway to the Martim Moniz station, and climbing up Escadinhas da Saúde, with the help of the new escalators, we reached the street Rua Marquês Ponte de Lima. Following the directions on Google Maps, we passed by narrow streets and went up and down and up again, until we arrive at one of the entrances of Jardim da Cerca da Graça.

When we arrived there, I was completely surprised by the scenery. This big garden, with an area of 1.7 hectares, located right above Mouraria old buildings and just below the Miradouro da Graça wall, was far different from the tiny garden below Miradouro da Graça that I had imagined.

Later, I discovered that Jardim da Cerca da Graça is the largest public green space in Lisbon historic district. It is not only a recreation space but also has the purpose of connecting Graça and Mouraria neighbourhoods.

This garden has three lookout points to admire the city, an amazing central lawn, a picnic area, a kiosk café with a terrace and a playground for the kids. While my kid was playing around in the playground, my husband and I relaxed drinking a cold beer at the kiosk terrace.

The best way to fit Jardim da Cerca da Graça on your Lisbon schedule is by combining it with other Lisbon attractions in the same area.

From there you are in a short walking distance to the following places:

Miradouro da Graça – 7 min walk

Miradouro Nossa Senhora do Monte– 4 min walk

Castelo de São Jorge – 15 min walk

Praça do Comércio – 20 min walk

If you are in Lisbon with kids, friends or by yourself, put Jardim da Cerca da Graça on your Lisbon bucket list and consider spending some hours there. It doesn’t matter if you will be relaxing laying on the lawn, watching your kids playing or just enjoying Lisbon view. I’m sure you will like it as much as I did.
