Lisbon details

Dear friend,

Hello from Lisbon! After a rainy week, the sun is finally back and the weather is perfect for a stroll around the city. In a day like today, two months ago, I joined two friends in a walking city tour through the streets of Lisbon downtown. Although I already know the city a lot, there is always something new to learn about this lovely city. Walking city tours, in my opinion, are the best way to explore the city and discover all the little surprises Lisbon has to offer.  In Lisbon, there are plenty of details ready to be discovered by a trained eye. They are hidden on the floor, on the walls and on the top of the buildings.  The street lamps adorned with a caravel and two birds on Rua Garret, in Chiado Neighborhood, captured my attention. Those old styled lamps can also be found on other parts of the city, but it was the first time I realized they were decorating and illuminating some of the streets in Chiado.  After a little research, I discovered that the caravel with two crows is the symbol of Lisbon. One of the theories to explain the presence of the crows is that they represent the pilot of the ship. Sailors from the Middle Ages were supposed to believe that the crows would guide them to a safe port. When they needed to go ashore, they would release the birds and follow their flight. If the crows didn’t find land, they would come back to the ship. Besides its history, those lamps are so charming and photogenic that I couldn’t avoid taking a picture of them. Did you notice any of those lamps when visiting Lisbon or any other interesting detail? I would love to hear from you.

Love, Cris
